I had never photographed in a cemetery before this, probably because a well known photographer I admire once said it shouldn't be done. This felt different to me, Père LaChaise is very large, very old, and incredibly rich with history and beauty. I spent a few hours here walking slowing around with my 4x5 making negatives of the details and orderly chaos that I found so interesting. Kathleen walked and searched out the sites of so many iconic masters of art, literature and history, she had fascinating stories to tell me over coffee and a croissant later. So much of our trip and my time photographing has been just like this, exploring simple but beautiful places slowly, and for me without previous ideas of what photographs I would make. A chance to respond to what is in front of me with out a plan, in a word it has been refreshing.
